—Of course, I’m diverse.
‘Cause…I’m an Artist.
A Writer. Director. Producer. Digital Content Creator 360VR Storyteller.
—Of course, I’m diverse.
‘Cause I’m a Mother. Sister. Spouse. Friend. Daughter.
—Of course, I’m diverse.
‘Cause I wear trousers with dresses on top.
Of course, I’m diverse ‘cause I dream in French and English.
—Of course, I’m diverse.
Not ‘cause of what I look like though, but ‘cause of who I AM.
So am I to accept being defined as a black Parisian Female Immigrant…
…who happens to be a Filmmaker? Mmmhhh…
I struggle with the social construct of diversity. In my opinion, it perpetuates stigma and marginalization. And dare I say, the T word —
—Tokenism?
See, when I look in the mirror I see myself as versatile, resourceful, determined, and that’s what fuels me.
Every
Single
Day
Ever since I embraced my desire to tell stories for a living, and evolve in the fierce Film and TV industry.
— So if I may…
To all emerging filmmakers out there, I’m telling you the same thing my mama told me:
— Never make apologies for who you are. Never. Ever.
Instead, hold onto your strengths. Work on your weaknesses.
And I will add to that.
No matter what, you’re unique and your voice is your own.
Find it. Follow it. Fine tune it.
Eventually your work will shine. And only what you deliver will matter.
Not what you look like!
