We need to hear different points of view in media or else stereotypes are always created as we only see through the lens of one side of the story.
We need people who are diverse to tell those stories and be given the chance to tell them. Placing different ethnicities as background in a story - by having tokens and not the true characters - will perpetuate these issues indefinitely. I'm always happy when I'm working on a film that has diverse cast and have it not once mention in the script what their race is.
I think it was a great experience directing a web series, I was able to really get inside the headspace of a director and understand them more (especially when they are entering my edit suite). As a director I think I didn't have any major barriers of being a woman of color luckily I had a great crew to work with. I think there were times I was second guessed until I proved that I was capable and experienced but I feel like that has been my experience in the industry mostly. Its hard to get someone to trust in you and your work in a male dominated position - you have always prove you are not only good at your job but the best at it.
It would be great to have a roster/list of women and POC (people of colour) who are working on in the industry so that they are well-known and easily accessible as well as meetups and social networking events (which are slowly starting to happen in the community).
